On 19 August 1944, the French Resistance in Paris launched an armed uprising against the German occupation garrison—the beginning of the liberation of the city, which lasted until 25 August. The German troops found themselves in an increasingly untenable position: Allied forces advanced from the west while internal resistance escalated. Jack Lieb documented this phase in his color film, which records the liberation of Paris as one of the central sections of his material from Normandy to Germany. Despite Hitler’s order to destroy the city, the German city commandant General Dietrich von Choltitz capitulated on 25 August, so that Paris remained largely intact.
