On August 19, 1944, the French Résistance began an armed uprising against German occupation in Paris—the prelude to the liberation of the city, which ended on August 25, 1944 with the surrender of the German city commandant General Dietrich von Choltitz. Despite Hitler’s order to destroy Paris, the city remained largely intact. Jack Lieb filmed this phase of the war as part of his advance with Allied forces from Normandy via Versailles to Paris. The footage documents the ongoing German resistance in the first days of the Paris uprising.
