The photograph was taken in 1944 during the course of the Allied advance through France following the landing in Normandy. It belongs to that phase of Jack Lieb’s film that documents the path of U.S. forces from the Normandy hinterland via Cherbourg toward Paris. The rare color footage shows the daily life of motorized units, which in other contemporary sources is transmitted almost exclusively in black and white.
