The photograph was taken in 1944 as part of the Normandy campaign and belongs to the phase of the Allied advance in France. With his 16-mm Kodachrome camera, Jack Lieb captured not only combat scenes but also such candid shots of individual soldiers. Such color portraits from this context are extraordinarily rare, as the majority of surviving material from the Western campaign of 1944 exists exclusively in black and white.
