Major General Harry John Collins (1895–1963) was commander of the 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. The photograph was taken in 1944 during the course of the Allied advance through France following D-Day. Collins was among the highly decorated divisional commanders of the Western campaign; his division would later play a significant role in the advance into Germany and Austria. Jack Lieb captured such encounters with high-ranking officers in color—a record that was rare in the otherwise predominantly black-and-white photographic archive of the era.
