On May 6, 1937, the hydrogen gas of the Zeppelin LZ 129 Hindenburg ignited during the mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The airship burned completely in less than one minute. This phase of the disaster—explosion and crash—was captured by several newsreel cameras and ranks among the most documented aviation catastrophes in history. 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
