On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst and burned out within seconds. This still image documents the immediate fire phase of the disaster, in which the hydrogen-filled airship sank uncontrollably to the ground. 36 of the 97 people on board perished. The event was recorded by several newsreel cameras and is regarded as the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
