On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The hydrogen-filled airship burned completely within approximately half a minute. The photograph documents the moment of spreading fire and rising smoke and flame clouds – one of the phases of the disaster most intensely captured by newsreel cameras. 36 people lost their lives; the accident marked the end of commercial passenger airship transportation.
