On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its landing maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. The photograph shows the airship in the immediate phase of descent, as the burning hull sank to the ground. 36 of the 97 people on board perished. The disaster, captured by several newsreel cameras, marked the end of the era of commercial passenger airship travel.
