On May 6, 1937, the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the mooring maneuver at the Lakehurst naval station and burned completely within seconds. The still image shows the moment of the burning airship sinking to the ground — the phase in which the framework is already visibly exposed and fire has engulfed the vessel. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster, captured by several film cameras, marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
