On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its docking maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The hydrogen-filled airship burned out within seconds; of 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The photograph documents the moment of the fire in which the exposed structural framework of the Zeppelin becomes visible before the wreckage sank to the ground. The disaster, captured by several newsreel cameras, marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
