On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The hydrogen-filled airship burned completely in less than one minute. Several newsreel teams — including Pathé News, Paramount News, Universal Newsreel, and Movietone News — recorded the event on film. Of the 97 people aboard, 36 perished; the disaster is regarded as the end of commercial passenger airship service.
