On May 6, 1937, the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at the naval station in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. The still image shows the final phase of the disaster: the aluminum framework of the airship lies on the ground, while dense smoke rises and first responders and eyewitnesses reach the scene of the accident. Of 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster, captured by several newsreel cameras, marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
