After the fire of May 6, 1937, the completely burned-out skeleton of LZ 129 Hindenburg lay on the grounds of Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The aerial photograph documents the extent of the destruction: of the largest airship ever built, only the deformed aluminum framework remained. In the hours and days following the disaster, investigators and emergency personnel inspected the wreckage to clarify the cause and course of the fire. The catastrophe, in which 36 people lost their lives, sealed the end of commercial passenger airship service.
