After the fire and complete burning of the LZ 129 Hindenburg within seconds, the largely destroyed aluminum skeleton of the airship remained on the grounds of Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The photograph shows the aftermath of the disaster: rescue vehicles and emergency personnel are on site and begin to secure and inspect the wreckage. In the accident of May 6, 1937, 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives; the disaster marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
