On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its landing maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within less than a minute. The still image shows the wreckage immediately after the crash: the aluminum framework of the airship lies on the ground while the fire had not yet completely extinguished. 36 of the 97 people on board perished. The disaster sealed the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
