On May 6, 1937, officials, press representatives, and invited guests awaited the arrival of the Hindenburg (LZ 129) at the naval air station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The mooring maneuver was considered a routine procedure; the Hindenburg had already completed the transatlantic route multiple times previously. Minutes after the mooring operation began, the airship caught fire and burned out in approximately half a minute.
