In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany—a central event of the Cold War and a signal of Western unity. The photograph shows Kennedy in a meeting with Federal President Heinrich Lübke as part of the official program. The four-day visit took Kennedy from Cologne and Bonn via Frankfurt to West Berlin, where he spoke in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall on June 26, 1963.
