The photograph shows the barrier installations of the Berlin Wall: barbed wire in the foreground, behind it a row of anti-tank obstacles (Spanish riders) on open ground. The Berlin Wall had been erected by the GDR in August 1961 and divided the city into a western and an eastern part. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963 was regarded as a clear affirmation by the United States of the city’s freedom and support for the population affected by the division.
