The Brandenburg Gate was in June 1963 a central symbol of German division. During Kennedy’s Berlin visit on June 26, 1963, the U.S. President viewed the gate from the West Berlin side; the GDR had covered the passages with red curtains to block the view to the east. The photograph of the Quadriga documents the landmark in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall that had existed since 1961.
