On the occasion of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963, the GDR had the Brandenburg Gate draped with red curtains to block Kennedy’s view toward East Berlin. The Brandenburg Gate had been located in the border area since the construction of the Wall in 1961 and had become a symbol of German division. Kennedy’s visit to the Wall and the Brandenburg Gate made the conflict between East and West during the Cold War immediately apparent.
