The Street of June 17th in West Berlin has borne this name since 1953 in commemoration of the popular uprising in the GDR on June 17, 1953. It runs from the Brandenburg Gate to Ernst-Reuter-Platz and was, in the context of the Cold War, a symbolically significant location. Kennedy’s visit to Berlin on June 26, 1963 took him through this very part of the divided city, where the proximity to the Wall and to sealed border crossings made the division of Germany immediately visible.
