On the occasion of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963, the GDR had the Brandenburg Gate covered with red curtains in order to deny Kennedy a view of the eastern part of the city. The image shows persons installing or positioning these curtains on the pillars of the gate. The draping of the Brandenburg Gate became a symbolic image of the Cold War and German division.
