On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy drove through West Berlin in an open car. The street sign “Straße des 17. Juni” – named after the popular uprising in the GDR on June 17, 1953 – is visible in the image and points to a central site of remembrance in German division history. A motorcycle escort accompanied the motorcade, in which the population received Kennedy with great enthusiasm. The visit took place under the sign of the Cold War and American solidarity with divided Berlin.
