On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy drove through West Berlin in an open car. The street sign ‘Straße des 17. Juni’—named after the popular uprising in East Germany on June 17, 1953—is visible in the background and definitively locates the scene. The street leads from the Brandenburg Gate through the Tiergarten and was one of the central stations of the motorcade. The population of West Berlin received Kennedy on that day with extraordinary enthusiasm.
