On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Brandenburg Gate during his visit to Germany, viewing it from a specially erected observation platform on the West Berlin side. The GDR had covered the gate’s passages with red curtains to prevent Kennedy from seeing East Berlin; an English-language propaganda banner of the GDR is visible in the background. The visit to the gate was a symbolically charged station in the Cold War, only two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
