In the context of his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy also met with representatives of the Western Allies. The visible British flag indicates the presence of British armed forces or authorities, which were stationed in the Federal Republic and in West Berlin as an occupying power. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and Western solidarity with the divided city of Berlin, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
