As part of his Berlin leg on June 26, 1963, Kennedy toured various symbolic sites in the divided city with his delegation. An observation platform near the Reichstag building afforded a view of the immediately adjacent Berlin Wall and Soviet-controlled East Berlin. The Reichstag had been situated directly at the border since the construction of the Wall in 1961; such viewing platforms served Western visitors as a striking illustration of German division.
