On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled by motorcade through West Berlin as part of his visit to Germany. At the Brandenburg Gate, which at that time stood directly on the sector border as a symbol of German division, the GDR had specially hung red curtains over the passages to deny Kennedy a view into the eastern part. The scene illustrates the confrontation of the Cold War: the gate had stood on the East Berlin side since the construction of the Wall in 1961 and was impassable for West Berliners. Kennedy’s visit was intended to reaffirm to the population of West Berlin the continued support of the United States.
