On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy drove through West Berlin in a motorcade. The Street of June 17, which leads to the Victory Column, was secured and lined with numerous onlookers. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin was the highlight of his visit to Germany and was regarded as a clear signal of Western solidarity with the divided city, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
