The Berlin Wall was erected in August 1961 on orders of the East German leadership and divided the city into a western and an eastern part. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963 was regarded as a direct response to the construction of the wall and as a sign of American solidarity with the besieged city. The photograph was taken during the Berlin portion of his visit to Germany, in which Kennedy inspected the wall, among other activities.
