On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited Checkpoint Charlie in West Berlin during his visit to Germany. The checkpoint was the most famous border crossing between the American and Soviet-controlled sectors of the divided city. An honor guard of Allied and West German soldiers received the President at this symbolically significant Cold War location, which had gained international prominence since the construction of the wall in 1961.
