The Allied Control Point was a visible symbol of the Four-Power presence in West Berlin. The flags of the USA, France, and Great Britain stood for the shared protective mandate of the Western Allies toward the divided city. During Kennedy’s visit on June 26, 1963, the delegation also inspected the border crossing Checkpoint Charlie, the most well-known Allied control point at the Berlin Wall. The visit was intended to underscore the continuing Western presence and determination in the Cold War.
