On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited Checkpoint Charlie, the Allied control point and one of the best-known border crossings between West and East Berlin. The sign “Allied Check Point” with the flags of the three Western powers—the USA, France, and Great Britain—symbolized the Allied status of West Berlin. Since the construction of the Wall in 1961, the checkpoint had been a central symbol of division and the Cold War. Kennedy’s visit to this location underscored the West’s determination not to abandon West Berlin.
