The four-day trip took him through several West German cities and culminated on June 26, 1963 in West Berlin, where Kennedy delivered his famous speech in front of the Schöneberg City Hall. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall that had existed since 1961, and was intended to underscore American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
