During his visit to Germany, U.S. President John F. Kennedy viewed the Berlin Wall on June 26, 1963. A provisional observation platform had been erected for the visit, which provided a view of the border strip and the East German territory. The construction of the wall in 1961 provided the immediate occasion for Kennedy’s symbolic gesture of solidarity toward the West Berlin population. The viewing of the wall was among the most striking stations of the visit and underscored the political message of the American presence in the divided city.
