The still image is from film material of John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963. The Berlin leg took place on June 26, 1963 and was the high point of the journey; Kennedy visited, among other places, the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate, and delivered his famous speech in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall. The visit was a central symbol of Western solidarity with West Berlin in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, which had existed since 1961.
