On the occasion of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963, the GDR had the Brandenburg Gate draped with red cloths to block the view into the eastern part of the city. The Berlin Wall, erected in 1961, is visible in the foreground, underscoring the symbolic character of the photograph. The Brandenburg Gate stood at this time directly on the border between East and West Berlin and was one of the most striking symbols of German division during the Cold War.
