On the occasion of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963, the GDR had the passages of the Brandenburg Gate draped with red curtains in order to deny Kennedy a view of the eastern part of the city. An English-language propaganda banner referred to the Yalta and Potsdam agreements and directed provocative questions at Kennedy and the Western powers. These measures reflected the tension of the Cold War, in the context of which Kennedy’s entire visit to Germany took place. The Brandenburg Gate, since the construction of the Wall in 1961 a symbol of German division, was a central stop on Kennedy’s route through West Berlin.
