During his visit to Germany on June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy inspected various stations at the Berlin border, including Checkpoint Charlie. The photograph shows uniformed soldiers at a secured checkpoint with a barrier and stop sign. The border crossing symbolized the division of the city, which had been reality since the construction of the Wall in 1961. Kennedy’s visit was intended to demonstrate Western resolve and signal solidarity with the West Berlin population.
