During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets in many places. The photograph shows an extraordinarily dense crowd receiving the President with great enthusiasm – spectators crowded even onto the balconies of the surrounding buildings. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961 and held great symbolic significance for the West German and West Berlin population.
