During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, large crowds lined the streets and squares in many places. The image shows a densely packed crowd of spectators; a cameraman holds his film camera aloft in order to document the event. Kennedy’s visit triggered extraordinary enthusiasm among the population in the Federal Republic and in West Berlin, which occurred in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961.
