On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy landed at Tempelhof Airport in West Berlin as part of his visit to Germany. The photograph shows the official welcoming ceremony on the tarmac, at which Kennedy spoke to those assembled at a microphone podium. According to the caption, he was accompanied by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall erected in 1961, and culminated in Kennedy’s speech in front of the Schöneberg City Hall.
