On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy landed at Tempelhof Airport in West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy together with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer at a microphone—presumably during a brief welcoming address immediately following his arrival. The Berlin visit was the highlight of Kennedy’s visit to Germany (June 23–26, 1963) and took place in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall two years earlier.
