On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited West Berlin as part of his visit to Germany. The photograph shows Kennedy together with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Governing Mayor Willy Brandt. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the wall construction that had existed since 1961 and culminated in Kennedy’s speech in front of the Schöneberg City Hall.
