The photograph shows Martin Luther King Jr. in close-up at the lectern, with a bundle of microphones from various broadcasting stations in front of him. Behind him, companions, co-organizers, and marshals crowd together; several of them wear the light-colored caps of the Marshalls, who ensured the orderly conduct of the event. The photograph was taken on August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech before several hundred thousand participants of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The march was one of the central mass demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement and consolidated demands for legislative civil rights, the end of racial segregation, and equal economic opportunities. The scene is among the most well-known visual motifs of the movement and stands exemplary for the peaceful, organized mass protest of 1963.
