The still image shows a densely packed crowd in motion and excitement on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. In the background, the Reflecting Pool extends along rows of trees, and the Washington Monument is visible in the distance at the center of the frame. Several demonstrators raise their arms in the air, others shout or laugh; the atmosphere is clearly euphoric. On individual persons, badges and inscriptions are visible that reference the NAACP, one of the leading organizations of the march. The photograph was taken during the rally at the Lincoln Memorial and documents the participants’ reaction to the speeches and musical performances. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963 brought together, according to contemporary estimates, more than 200,000 people who demonstrated for civil rights and economic equality.
