The still image shows Martin Luther King Jr. at the lectern, surrounded by a cluster of microphones that relayed his words to the crowd and to radio broadcasts. Behind him stand marshals and attendants wearing white sailor caps, alongside additional participants and a uniformed security officer. The photograph is from the closing rally of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was from this lectern that King delivered the speech that later became known as the “I Have a Dream” speech. The image represents the pinnacle of one of the largest demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement, which called for civil rights and employment for the African American population.
