The photograph shows Martin Luther King Jr. at the podium, which is equipped with several microphones. Behind and beside him stand numerous men in suits, crowded closely together, including marshals wearing the characteristic white caps of the Marshal Service as well as uniformed police officers. The photograph was taken on August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial, the central location of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Before approximately 250,000 participants, King delivered his speech here, later known as the “I Have a Dream” speech. The image represents the climax of one of the largest mass rallies of the U.S. civil rights movement, which united demands for equal civil rights, the end of racial segregation, and economic participation.
