The photograph shows Martin Luther King Jr. at the lectern with several microphones on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Gathered densely around him are co-organizers, clergy, other participants, and uniformed marshals; in the background, the columns and a section of the seated statue of Abraham Lincoln are visible. The scene is among the highlights of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963, at which King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. The march was one of the largest demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement and called for an end to racial segregation as well as equal civil rights and employment. The image documents the center of the rally at the Lincoln Memorial and the broad coalition of civil rights, church, and labor union representatives that carried the event.
